2017 Ford Explorer Changes and Release
Several Ford SUV models are due to receive updates in the near future. One of them is the 2017 Ford Exporer SUV which comes with a number of substantial improvements. This widely popular model has been around mostly unchanged since 2011 when it adopted unibody architecture instead of the old body-on-frame construction. The new model is expected to arrive during 2016, significantly enhanced compared to the outgoing version.
2017 Ford Explorer New Design
The test prototype of the new Explorer has been spied recently. Although heavily camouflaged, this test mule revealed most of the upcoming styling alterations. According to Ford, the future SUV design philosophy will be based on the Edge concept. The same goes for the new Explorer which is going to borrow most of the styling cues from the aforementioned concept. The most striking changes are visible on its front end which features a new grille as well as a reshaped bumper with additional air inlets. Also, the front light clusters have been revised including the headlights and LED fog lamps. At the back, the cargo area has been reshaped, while the rear window has grown in size to provide better visibility.
The 2017 Ford Explorer will ride on the same underpinnings as its predecessor, namely the modified version of the Volvo D4 platform. An all-new platform will have to wait until the completely redesigned model arrives during 2017 as the 2018 Ford Explorer. Ford has already started using lightweight aluminum platforms with the F-150 model, thus reducing the vehicle’s curb weight by 700 pounds. A similar thing happened with the 2017 Explorer which lost around 300 pounds thanks to its new aluminum parts. It is all part of the recent trends of reducing the overall weight in order to achieve better performance and fuel efficiency numbers.
2017 Ford Explorer Engine Options
As for the engine department, the new Explorer will once again feature the tried and tested 3.5-liter V6 that gives 290 hp. Its fuel economy is rated at 20 mpg combined. Now, the brand new 2.3-liter EcoBoost unit is due to replace the 2.0-liter engine. Both engines will be paired with a six-speed automatic transmission, although rumor has it that the upcoming Explorer could receive a new nine-speed gearbox. However, this new transmssion is much more likely to arrive with the 2018 new-generation model.
2017 Ford Explorer Price
The outgoing model is currently priced at $31,000 and the upcoming model is expected to stay in that range. The pricing makes the Explorer one of the most affordable three-row SUVs available on the US market. It is also highly competitive in this segment when it comes to the list of standard equipment and amenities. Its downsides include lack of interior space as well as poor fuel economy. The company has decided to tackle these issues by improving its aerodynamics and reducing the curb weight. However, there is still plenty of room for improvement when it comes to cabin space and cargo area. It remains to be seen whether the 2017 Ford Explorer will manage to overcome these problems. If not, we will have to wait until the next generation of this great SUV arrives.
