2017 Mercedes-Benz GLE New Naming Strategy

The 2017 Mercedes-Benz GLE will actually arrive as an updated version of the familiar ML-Class. Apart from receiving its new moniker, the brand’s best-selling SUV will adopt a more stylish look, upgraded technology and the first plug-in hybrid model as well. It’s important to note that the GLE SUV doesn’t have anything in common with the GLE Coupe which is an all-new model launched by the German automaker.

As far as the exterior design is concerned, the upcoming GLE will essentially retain the recognizable ML-Class profile. However, the 2017 Mercedes-Benz GLE is due to receive revised front and rear fascias including new LED light clusters, as well as new fenders and alloy wheels. Compared to its predecessor, the GLE will feature a more aggressively shaped sheet metal.

Inside the cabin, expect to see an updated version of the interior design seen in the old M-Class models. In addition to familiar Nappa leather upholstery, there will be more of high-end materials that include wood, aluminum, carbon fiber and a number of Piano Black accents. A new larger touch-sreen display is mounted on a revised center console, while the infotainment system now comes with an enhanced touchpad controller. There will also be a power driver seat with memory, a tilt/telescoping steering column and keyless start as standard equipment.

As for the GLE’s engine range, it is expected to carry over mostly unchanged from the ML models. The entry-level GLE 300d 4Matic will be motivated by a four-cylinder turbodiesel that gives 201 horsepower. Next in line is the gasoline-powered 3.5-liter V6 that propels the 2017 Mercedes GLE 350 models and generates 302 horsepower. The more powerful gasoline option comes as a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 churning out 329 hp. Those who opt for the performance-oriented AMG variant will get a 5.5-liter twin-turbo V8 that cranks out between 518 and 550 hp, while the GLE 63 S 4Matic will have 577 ponies at its disposal. When it comes to the plug-in hybrid, the 2017 Mercedes-Benz GLE 550e 4Matic combines the twin-turbo V6 with an electric motor that makes additional 114 horsepower. Its combined output of 436 hp and 479 lb-ft of torque is transmitted to the wheels through a seven-speed Tronic Plus automatic gearbox.

2017 Mercedes-Benz GLE Price

The base GLE 350 is expected to start around $51,000, while the range-topping 2017 Mercedes-Benz GLE 63 S AMG will be priced at $107,000. Unfortunately, the pricing figures for the hybrid version are still unavailable.
