2017 VW Touareg Redesign and Release Date
Volkswagen plans to reveal the latest generation of the popular Touareg SUV by the end of 2016. It is then expected to hit the showrooms in early 2017. The 2017 VW Touareg will arrive as a completely redesigned model, thus marking the first model year of its third iteration.
Volkswagen has already showcased several interesting concept models to announce the future Touareg. Of course, one of these concept vehicles will serve as a blueprint for the production-ready model. The 2017 VW Touareg will receive a thoroughly redesigned interior based on what the VW CrossBlue Concept model previewed. Besides getting a whole new cabin design, the next Touareg will be enhanced in other segments as well. Its new underpinnings and reshaped sheet metal are expected to make it even more appealing than its predecessor.
2017 VW Touareg Changes
As for the styling cues, the Touareg will be based mostly on the aforementioned concept. However, its underpinnings will be borrowed from the upcoming 2016 Audi Q7 SUV. Thanks to its new MLB Evo platform, the Q7 will be 300 kg lighter than its predecessor. The same will happen with the 2017 Touareg model.
Alongside the 2017 Touareg, the new-generation Porsche Cayenne SUV will also make its debut for the 2017 model year. These two models, together with the Audi Q7, were developed simultaneously and share a lot of their features.
By introducing all these changes and updates, VW intends to push the Touareg to a new level. The new model is expected to come as a more refined vehicle. The 2017 VW Touareg will boast a more premium feel than ever before.
2017 VW Touareg TDI Specs
Back in 2014, a test prototype of the new Touareg was spotted riding on the Q7’s chassis. It wasn’t clear from the beggining to what extent the 2016 Audi Q7 and 2017 VW Touareg will be related but it later became apparent. Apart from sharing the same platform, the two models will be powered by a similar engine range as well.
As for the 2016 Audi Q7, it offers a wide range of both gasoline- and diesel-powered engines. The gasoline options include a 2.0-liter TFSI making 252 hp and a 3.0-liter TFSI with 333 hp. The diesel range consists of a 3.0-liter TDI engine that gives 272 hp or 218 hp, while the range-topping 2016 Audi SQ7 comes with a twin-turbo 3.0-liter V6 TDI engine with electric turbocharging. Some of these units might find their place in the 2017 VW Touareg SUV. Also, there is a possibility we might see the VW Touareg V6 as well as the VW Touareg V10 versions. One of the available transmissions will be an enhanced version of the 10-speed double-clutch DSG gearbox.
Based on the fact that the new Q7 is offered as a Plug-in hybrid, the 2017 VW Touareg Plug-in hybrid version wouldn’t come as a surprise. It’s interesting to note that the new Q7 e-tron quattro plug-in hybrid features an impressive fuel efficiency and extremely low CO2 emissions. This hybrid system includes a 3.0-liter TDI conventional engine, a 94 kW electric motor and li-ion batteries, paired with an 8-speed tiptronic gearbox and quattro drive. The system’s total output is 373 hp, with 700 Nm of torque. Its fuel economy is estimated at 1,7 l/100 km, with 50 g/km of CO2 emissions. It remains to be seen whether the new Touareg will be available with the same system under its hood.
